It’s that time again!  The 3rd Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge is officially underway, and I’m excited to be participating once again.

Today is day two, and we’re still going strong.  Yesterday, after I decided to challenge myself within the challenge, I forgot to put a cover on Jett, and, well, let’s just say.. he’s been sick, and I learned my lesson!  I won’t be doing the rest of the Flats Challenge coverless, that’s for sure!

Flats Challenge Question of the Day

Dirty Diaper Laundry asks: How did you Prepare?  List your supplies, where you bought them, how you made them, how much you paid, etc.

Between the Kids replies:  I personally didn’t do anything different to prepare than I normally do for my diapering routine!  I decided to do without a camp style washer, because I have a pretty deep sink, and I don’t really care to break my back over the tub.

I mentioned this post yesterday, but it’s funny that today’s question is about supplies and costs, because I wrote all of that out in the comparison – Flat Cloth Diapers – Compare Cost to Fitteds.

This is actually everything I’m using for this challenge!  Almost everything that I have, I’ve had for at least a year, because I am finding that I’m using the same flats and blankets that I used last year on top of a few other things!

Flats Challenge

It may take a little hunting, but you can usually find the really good birdseye flat diapers online for a good price.

  • Birdseye Flat Diapers – $1.50 – $1.58 (CD stores or Amazon)
  • Flour Sack Towels –  5 for $5 (Walmart)
  • Receiving Blankets – Free (around the house/baby showers) – $0.25 (thrift stores)
  • Flannel Fabric – $2+ per yard
  • Front and back panel of a Tshirt or sweatshirt – Free

Compare the cost of 12 new flats on the higher end to the cost of 12 new fitted diapers on the lower end.

  • $18.96 – flats ($1.58 each)
  • $108.00 – fitteds ($9.00 each)

Most of the covers that I’m using for the challenge were either review covers, gifted covers, or covers that I purchased used.  All in all, I’d say that the total amount of money spent on the 8 or so covers that I have is about $20.

The only difference would be that I am using a waffle weave fabric that I bought a long time ago, so it’s basically free to me.  I never had time to serge the edges, so I just cut it, and because I’m handwashing, there’s very minimal raveling.  I love it.

Flats and Handwashing Challenge Day 2

Today, Andy stayed home from work, because he got what we had, and the older boys went to school.  The Flats Challenge doesn’t really phase him one way or the other, because he’s used to us using the flats.  Actually, he’s just used to asking, “use this diaper?” and we’re good.

The only difference is that I am handwashing, which I normally do not do, and I’ve put away all of the AIOs so that my hubby doesn’t accidentally reach for them.  I have to say, though, that I’m kinda liking the wash as I go thing.  It doesn’t take very long to wash one diaper at a time!  There are only two things that I DON’T like…  the extra washing is making my hands rough (I need gloves, but eh…), and I don’t like the feel of the flats when they’re air dried.  Neither of them are a big enough deal to make me quit the challenge, though!

Guess who had little time for photos today!?  This girl.  I did, however, manage to get a pic of some flats on the line after the wind blew them all crazy like!  I love having a line.

This is my favorite photo from yesterday!

Cloth Diapers

This is about as good as it gets with my simple little diaper routine!
