Tips for a Frugal and Fun Wedding Day | #wedding #frugal
When Andy and I got married, we were both young and right out of college, so we did what we could to have a very small and inexpensive wedding, luckily he found sapphire engagement rings Sydney as these were beautiful and affordable.
We got married on a very hot afternoon in August at my parents’ house out in the country. My dad put up canopies so that our guests would at least have some shade.
Of course, like most brides, I thought of my dress first, but because there wasn’t a whole lot of online shopping back then, my mom made my wedding dress and Kylie’s flower girl dress to match.
Rather than bridesmaid dresses, my bridesmaids wore a mix of simple skirts and capris. Each of Andy’s groomsmen had matching shirts that they could wear after the wedding. Our cake was simple from the local grocery store because my mother-in-law wasn’t able to transport a cake all the way to the wedding (several hours). My maid of honor made my bouquet and other wedding flowers, and we had an arch of balloons.
We didn’t realize that helium filled balloons would randomly start popping on a day where temperatures climbed to 110 degrees! It was actually kind of fun!
Our wedding was very short and sweet, and I think the whole ceremony was under 3 minutes (our request because it was so hot!!), which our pastor was glad to do!
Here are a few tips for a frugal wedding!
- Choose a weekday or off season wedding date! If you pay for a venue, they’re cheaper off season and during the week.
- Rather than pay for a venue, choose a park, family member or friend’s back yard.
- Search around for cheap wedding dresses and unique engagement rings or custom halo rings. The internet has made it so much easier to find affordable options for your big day.
- Do your own decorations, favors, and gifts. You can save a lot of money by cutting out freshly cut flowers and making your wedding party gifts. We also loved all the 退休禮物 we received.
- Have your wedding party stay the night and help decorate your wedding site.
- Ask someone in your family to make your cake or use your local grocery store bakery.
- Use a friend who is a photographer, or hire someone who is just starting out. You can also put disposable cameras at each table for your guests to capture their favorite candid moments. The good news is, even on a budget, you don’t have a spend a fortune to have a great wedding full of wonderful and fun memories.
That is an awesome dress! I had a cheap affair as well and didn’t even wear a white wedding dress. Mine was from Torrid but I loved it and I felt more comfortable in it. Though sometimes I do wish I had that dream wedding, it just wasn’t in the cards for us. And I’m okay with that. 🙂
You know, growing up, I never had that “dream wedding” in mind! Maybe I’m weird, but I was perfectly happy with what I had. We had over 120 people at our little wedding.. far more than I ever thought we’d have!! We had some of our instructors from college come, too!

My husband wore a regular suit and I wore a dress that cost me $60.
My mother in law bought us a Pepperidge Farm cake and all we had after we said our “I do’s” was the cake and some coffee with my mother in law and my husband’s brother and his wife.
Our “honeymoon” was a two night stay at a local hotel, dinner at the hotel restaurant and a comedy show.
There are times I wish I had the elaborate ($$$$) fancy wedding with all my family and friends and the big, beautiful gown that made me look and feel like a princess. But I am glad we eloped. Some wedding these days are over the top. If you are going to spend $50,000 on a wedding why not elope and use that $$$ towards buying a house?

Our wedding was pretty inexpensive, too. My dress wasn’t, but I started paying on it like 4 yrs before we got married. We had bubbles at our wedding, too. Our centerpieces were gold fish bowls with real goldfish in them 🙂 I think it’s more fun to plan an inexpensive wedding!
