Thank you to Pop Secret for sponsoring our fun with forts and today’s post!

I really felt bad for my kiddos over Christmas break.  Pretty much the entire time, it either rained or it was wet and cold because of the rain and cold fronts.  Their Nana gave them new bikes for Christmas, and they weren’t even able to ride them.  It was tough keeping them busy inside, because (as you know!) the last thing kiddos want to do on their break is clean the house all day!  So what else was there to do to keep away the boredom? We took a page out of Pop Secret family fun recipes for a good time and decided to build pillow forts, of course!

You see, most people think that the key to a perfect blanket fort is based solely on the construction of the actual fort, but I beg to differ!  In addition to fort stability,  my thoughts on what makes the perfect fort is actually what goes into the fort itself! Sure, with three boys in the house, it’s pretty important to make sure chairs and books and whatever you use to build the fort isn’t going to come tumbling down on their heads at any given time (which may be half the fun, and the rebuilding keeps them busy!), but check out what our top five keys to the perfect Pop Secret Pillow fort consist of, and see if they fall in line with what your family considers important in fort building!

Top Five Elements to Perfect Pop Secret Forts:

Stability – Make sure you have a solid foundation, walls, and roof for your Pop Secret forts.  If you use lighter furniture to help hold up the blankets, the heavier the blankets, the more likely that your fort is going to cave in (and a chair will no doubt knock a not on someone’s noggin!).

Air Conditioning – Without a doubt, you want to make sure you have some kind of air flow. Hire AC repair in Clifton NJ if needed. We have a bladeless fan that is safe for kids of all ages, but my sisters and I would use a box fan which actually doubled as entertainment and hours of annoying my dad with hour funny voices as we talked and sang into the fan.  Admit it, you did it, too.

Lighting – My dad never allowed us to touch his flashlights growing up, so we had to use lamps.  Trust me when I say they are not stable enough to be a fort frame.  It will fall over, and that can spell disaster.  Now, though most kid have their own flashlights, and even Christmas rope lights work great!   If you do not have lighting, and they love to read or play board games, make sure the opening is positioned in front of a window or light for lighting.  If they like to play video game sor watch movies, position the front door in front of the television!

Pillows – Every. single. pillow. in. the. house.  Just give in to it.  They’re kids, and you only live once!

Entertainment – Whether your kids like to read, play video games, watch movies, play board games… It doesn’t matter.  Fill that puppy up with  anything they need to have a good time.  Don’t forget the Nerf guns to keep the zombies away.

Food – The best, and I mean BEST fort food – hands down – is Pop Secret Popcorn.  Kids love popcorn, it’s quick and easy to make, easy to transport, and if they spill it in the fort, it’s totally easy cleanup with a broom or vacuum.

Our go-to snack of choice for parties, get-togethers, holidays, and movie nights is always a great salty-sweet treat!  We take Pop Secret popcorn and add M&Ms and pretzels!  When we’re feeling a little extra festive, we drizzle chocolate or vanilla almond bark over it for that extra sweet goodness!  We love it!

My boys almost have the perfect place for a fort in their room.  They have loft type bunk beds where a third bed is on the floor for their little brother.  They have pretty much everything covered.  Stability, pillows (mattress, really!), entertainment, and air flow.  The only thing not allowed in there is food, which is why it’s almost perfect!
