There is a ton to do in Houston, but today we’re featuring activities that are free and perfect for late spring and the early summer months. School will be out soon and hyperactive kidlets will be begging to be entertained! So without further adieu, here’s a wide range of free activities in Houston.

Miller Outdoor Theatre- Featuring eight months of free outdoor shows and entertainments in the form of dance, music, and theatre. They have special performances for children throughout the day from March to October as well as shows geared towards older kids and adults at night. It’s a good way to gauge if your kids might be musically or artistically inclined, or even if they seem to have a bit of interest. If so, you could take it further by looking for a private woodwinds teacher that can give them a few beginner classes and see what they think. You could be giving them a fun hobby to explore. If they do seem interested, there are options like a summer musical showcase bootcamp where they can start to learn with nice teachers, having lots of fun, and making new friends.

Check out their performance calendars and grab a picnic basket and blanket and enjoy the show with your kiddos!

Discovery Green- The Discovery Green has a calendar of events with everything from Lego Movies planned to yoga and paddle boarding. The signature events usually have a minimal free, but everything else is usually free!

Houston Arboretum & Nature Center – Admission to the nature center is free and the nature grounds and trails are open all year round. Check out their posted events to find out what summer camps and programs are going down! (Note- most programs have a cost.)

Waugh Bridge Bat Colony- For the nature loving and adventurous kids, a visit to this bat colony is a perfect evening activity. There are at least two hundred and fifty thousand bats living underneath the bridge and they emerge close to sunset.

Contemporary Arts Museum- This one might be an activity better suited for tweens and teens, but the museum does have a few things geared towards younger kids. Admission is free and you get a chance to view beautiful art pieces from all over the world that have been painted in the past forty years.

Hermann Park- Parking is free to come and visit this gorgeous park. Kids will have fun on the playground and exploring the grounds and Japanese Gardens. It’s a huge park where you can throw a birthday party outdoors or have a Sunday afternoon picnic.

Crystal Beach- On warmer days, pack up the car and take a trip down to Crystal Beach. The beach is less packed during school hours, so if you have little ones who aren’t in school yet, definitely go then. And during the summer, if you’re looking to avoid the chaos on the weekends, take the kidlets during the weekdays.
