I have given birth to four kids.  All four of my birthing experiences have been non-surgical, and the first was over sixteen years ago.  When talking about Light Bladder Leakage (LBL), I could probably just stop this post right here, and many of you would totally understand what I’m talking about!  Instead of just dropping a few product photos, I’ll go ahead and continue to explain.

Ok, wait.  First things first… let’s throw out all of the embarrassment, taboo, etc., etc., connotations that go along with talking about perfectly natural bladder issues.  It happens, let’s learn how we can deal with Light Bladder Leakage issues!

I spent Christmas with my family, and I when I noticed that my aunt had this hanging on her porch, I knew it was perfect for this post!  Can you relate to this post?

After my first kiddo who is sixteen years old, LBL wasn’t really that big of a deal.  I still had quite a bit of control over my bladder, and I didn’t think much of it.  After the birth of my second eleven years ago, I noticed that I had problems jumping on the trampoline with my first kiddo who was then 5 years old.  It still wasn’t that big of a deal because I’ve always heard that once you have a baby, you can’t jump on the trampoline without peeing on yourself.  It’s pretty much true.

After the completely natural birth of my now eight year old, he had a nuchal cord, so my midwife had to do a lot of stretching, pushing, pulling, etc., to help him come down and out.  After that birth, I noticed I had some pretty serious issues.  I can remember her saying after the birth that she had to do some moving around of my bladder for him to come down.  For several weeks, I noticed that I was having a hard time making it to the bathroom, but after a while, I just started wearing pads, and I thought I was going to have to deal with it for the rest of my life.

Laughing, sneezing, coughing, jumping, tensing, gagging (like when you brush your teeth!? or your kid has a nasty, nasty diaper!), etc.  You name it.  I leaked it.

Fast forward a bit, and here comes baby number four.  He’s four now, and not too long ago, I had to go see my (new) midwife for unrelated issues, and she asked the redundant, yet dreaded, question:

“Have you been doing your kegels?”

Now every. single. midwife, obstetrician, gynecologist knows the answer to this question.  But, they have to ask, because honestly, they know that if done right, it can help.  My answer was obviously no.

The simple definition of kegel exercises is this:  Repetitive contractions of the pelvic muscles that control the flow in urination in order to strengthen these muscles especially to control or prevent incontinence. (Merriam-Webster)

I’ve tried to remember.  I promise I have.  I’ve even downloaded an app on my phone to help me remember, but I can’t always remember.   Therefore, I still have LBL issues.

I realize that cloth pads aren’t an option for everyone, so I’m thankful for companies like Poise who know that light bladder leakage is a really issue among women.
