Regular games (hide and seek, tag, rock-paper-scissors, etc.) with your kids can lose their appeal after a while, so as parents, we need to be as inventive as possible about the activities we decide to do with our picky young ones. Here are some activities to try when the choice of activities gets tough.

As parents, keeping children engaged and excited about activities is an ever-evolving challenge. While traditional games hold their charm, it’s essential to infuse variety into your repertoire to cater to the evolving interests of your young ones.

When the choices become challenging, All Day Parenting is a valuable resource to turn to. Here, you can discover a treasure trove of ideas and inspiration for creative activities that foster both fun and learning. By incorporating these inventive activities, parents can ensure their children’s continuous growth, exploration, and, most importantly, the precious bonding that occurs during these shared moments.

Fun activities parents can do with their kids

Camp out in the living room. Campouts are always fun, no matter the age, and the ones in the living room have the extra bonus of such comforts as sleeping in the warmth of the hearth and being near the kitchen and bathroom. Tell camp stories and eat snacks as the night grows late.

Watch the clouds or stars. Beholding the surreal beauty of the sky is an activity you and your kids should never miss. Grab a blanket, select a spot and lie on your back in the park or in the backyard with your child. Watch as the clouds float by and talk to your child about the shapes or impressions he sees and compare your finding: Where you see a giraffe, but your kid seas a monkey, or a hippo. Get silly for added fun! (Is that a monkey riding a horse.)

Make bubbles. No need to go to the nearest toy store or order online. Create your own bubble solution by mixing one-part dishwashing detergent with 10 parts water, then add a little corn syrup or glycerine to make the bubbles hold. Shake the bottle to mix everything. You can use any open-ended object to make the bubbles, like the rings from a can or a straw. Try making bigger and bigger bubbles or quick ones while your kid tries to catch up by popping each one.

Arrange food art. Invade the kitchen and the fruit bowl for “art supplies” that both of you can arrange into fun pictures on a large plate. Cut up cucumbers, carrots, grapes and other colourful fruits or vegetables for inspiration. You can create anything from a train or clown to a beautiful piece of wacky art. Use raisins or olives for eyes, a slice of cheese as windows, round crackers as wheels – the possibilities are endless with this fun activity!

Put on a show with toys. I like this one, especially since a follow-up clean up is possible without them fussing (as long as you make it part of the play.) Ask your child to help you gather a cast of stuffed animals, dolls, and toy figures. Divide them up between the two of you equally and act out a play, using different animated voices for the different toys and dolls. Improvise as you go – it’s fun when the action is in a silly direction.

Gardening. Planting seedlings to grow into nice plants and flowers can be exciting and therapeutic for the both of you. It also has science in it, so it’s a real win-win. Allow your kid to assist you with the planting, caring, and even plucking of produce or flowers. Start with different varieties of orchids, which has the added bonus of being used later as home decoration.
