I was talking to my mom earlier, and we always seem to talk music.  My family has a pretty musical background.  My mom put out a record (yes, vinyl) when she was younger, my dad did musicals in school, my grandfather was in several quartets, and I’ve traveled around the country and many other countries singing.

We started talking about how we both agree that Whitney Houston was just about the best of the best.  Her voice was so angelic, she was absolutely beautiful, and she was so graceful and, pre-Bobby Brown fiasco, classy.

Whitney Houston – The Greatest Hits | I Will Always Love You (Glee Cast Version)

Rarely, rarely, rarely do you ever run across anyone who can actually “do” Whitney.  Although Jennifer Hudson did her best at the Grammy’s, she was nowhere near Whitney.  Sure, her death was a shock and just a day old at the time, so I know it had to be hard.

In the Valentine’s Day episode of Glee, I finally heard someone who could hold a candle to Whitney while singing a Whitney song.  Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes, did this tribute below.  I sent the link in an email to my mom, and after she listened, she called and was just as in awe as I was when I heard it the other night.

I would love to hear Amber Riley do a Whitney Houston cover album.
