*Warning*  This post talks about baby poop. Why didn’t you rinse the cloth diaper first?

why didn't you rinse the cloth diaper firstYesterday, after our Kids Beach Club preparation, I stopped by my mom’s house.  Jett pooped, and I just kinda rolled his diaper up, put it in the wetbag, and put a clean diaper on him.  I didn’t really think anything about it, because I do this all the time.  It’s my routine when I’m out and about.

Today, when I took him to her house so that I could go get my hair cut, I noticed that when I got him out of the car seat, he’d pooped.  I went in the house, and Mimi took him from me, didn’t think twice, and just went to change him.

Then she asked it.

Hey.  Yesterday, when he pooped, why didn’t you rinse the diaper out before you took it home?

Well, it was obvious, to me, why I did it, but it never really dawned on me that it’s not obvious to others who either don’t cloth diaper or don’t breastfeed.  She wasn’t trying to bash or be snarky.  She genuinely wanted to know.

Here’s my answer.

Jett is mostly breastfed.  He eats a little solid food here and there, but he nurses more than he eats.  Breastmilk is more absorbed into his body, causing his poop not to solidify.  (Side note – He’s only had 2 diapers in his almost 11 months of life that were a little on the solid side.)  I don’t dump his poop or rinse his diapers before washing them, because I don’t need to.  Breastmilk poop is water soluble, which means that it washes right out in the washer, so you don’t have to worry about clumps of yuckiness.

So, then she hit me with another question.

You just throw it with poop and all into your washer?  That’s gross.

My quick comeback was – as opposed to getting poop in my sink?

She ended the conversation with:

Good point.

I’m glad that she asked, because if I’d not told her, she’d have always thought that I was just gross, and that my washing machine was just full of poop!
