Andy and I both come from families of musically talented people.  Music has always been a part of our lives, and now, we’re passing it on to our kids.  The Teenager is extremely talented, vocally, and not only is she a part of her school’s varsity choir as a freshman, she is also a member of the youth and adult praise teams at our church.  She’s also done well at several competitions, and she’s been invited on a European Tour with the Star of Texas Music Ambassadors during the Summer of 2015.

As if we need another reason to listen to music, a big part of the Teen’s love for music comes from me passing her the love of musicals!

My poor dad.  When we were growing up, we would get on every inch of his nerved by reciting every line and every son from Grease 1 & 2 and Footloose.  And that’s when the movies weren’t even playing!  I can even remember my friends and I doing “plays” with numbers from Grease when I was younger.

By the time The Teen was 5, she had both Grease movies memorized, and she was even introduced to other great musicals of her time like Camp Rock and High School Musical.  Now that they’re on Netflix, she doesn’t have to deal with keeping with the DVDs or recording them if they come on network TV!

Honestly though, Grease and Footloose are both staples in our house.  Sometimes, we even start singing the songs just because.  Good times.

Not too long ago, the hubby and I were talking about how Frozen had so much hype because it was the first musical that Disney has put out in a long time, which got me thinking about the all the greats!  My dad was pretty fond of Mulan when it came out, and I love Pocahontas and Lion King – so much that we persuaded my high school choir director to let us do the end of the year concert singing some of those songs!  Of course, they were newer back then!

Love Musicals?  Get your fix on Netflix!

For you and the older kiddos:

1. Shrek the Musical (Definitely watching this one!!)
2. High School Musical
3. Grease
4. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
5. Footloose
6. The Phantom of the Opera
7. Camp Rock

For the littles:

1. Mulan
2. Pocahontas
3. The Prince of Egypt
4. Leap Frog: Numberland
5. Rock-A-Doodle (My boys loved this one when they were smaller!)

Our family tries to have a “Anything Goes” family movie night at least once a month where we watch movies (or musicals) together, and we eat whatever junk food we want for dinner while watching the movie.  Sometimes, this can get rather expensive since we let everyone choose their own food (popcorn, pizza, chips, chicken, candy, etc.), but it beats paying nine prices to take a family of six to the movies, and it’s awesome family time!

Do you have a favorite musical or two?
